Wheat straw is manufactured using the stalks of wheat from industrial farming. Uviewed as a “waste product” and burnt on huge bonfires creating lots of pollution and a vast carbon footprint. However since 2013 engineers pioneering bioplastic found a way to make a cellulose based material from wheat straw which was more durable, more biodegradable & more compostable than bamboo and sugar cane products and it’s from an extremely renewable source as Wheat will always be grown for our food supply.
Being only biodegradable is still great but it’s eco-neutral in that it doesn’t harm nor replenish the soil it degrades in. But wheat straw is not only biodegradable it is fully compostable, meaning it is eco-positive in that it replenishes the soil it degrades in with valuable enriching nutrients. Our wheat straw Ecomugs can last a lifetime, but will biodegrade in a year or less after its disposal in a landfill.
